In an effort to elevate the quality of education and align it with the demands of the 21st century, Kenya is on the way to modernising its education sector, with a particular focus on teacher education. The focus of this reform is the implementation of a competency-based curriculum, a forward-thinking approach designed to equip teacher educators and pre-service teachers with the skills and knowledge necessary to implement the competence-based curriculum currently introduced into the general education system.

Project objectives

The aim of the project is to support education reform in Kenya through the modernisation of teacher education. The project will help to enhance teacher education by adapting curricula to modern pedagogical trends, introducing innovative teaching methodologies, including digital pedagogy, to ensure that future teachers have the necessary competences to cope with the challenges of the educational environment.

Actions and results

Planned results of the project:

  1. Competences of universities and teaching staff: the capacity of the Institutes of Education delivering teacher training in the participating universities to develop, implement and evaluate competency-based curricula and to share this knowledge with other universities has increased.
  2. Teacher education curricula renewal process: in the universities involved in the project, existing teacher education curricula have been analysed and activities for the transition to competency-based curricula have been launched. Competency-based teacher education curricula reflect the latest knowledge and methods in the field of education and respond to the needs of teachers in the modern educational landscape.

The lines of action planned in the project are as follows:

  1. activities (training, mentoring, study visits) to support universities' capacity in the process of curriculum renewal and the transition to competence-based curricula;
  2. activities (training, mentoring, guideline development) to support the capacity of teacher educators to implement competency-based curricula and modern active learning methods.
