The ongoing war in Ukraine has placed immense pressure on the national health care system, damaging infrastructure and overwhelming medical personnel. Hospitals across the country are facing a sharp increase in trauma cases while still needing to provide essential care for civilians and displaced persons. This has exposed critical gaps in emergency response capacity and physical and mental rehabilitation services.

Berdychiv City Hospital in Ukraine’s Zhytomyr Region serves a population of 168,000, including residents of Berdychiv city and the surrounding areas, in addition to individuals from neighbouring districts and regions. Its location near a strategically important highway makes it accessible to many, including more than 4,000 internally displaced persons currently living in the area.

Project objectives

The aim of the project is to reconstruct the intensive care unit of Berdychiv City Hospital and conduct a training program for hospital staff to improve the quality of intensive care and rehabilitation services.

Actions and results

The project consists of two complementary components, which will be implemented in parallel:

Component 1 focuses on the reconstruction of the intensive care unit of the Berdychiv City Hospital. The main objective of the component is the comprehensive renovation and technological upgrade of the intensive care unit of the Berdychiv City Hospital to create modern conditions for the reception, diagnosis and treatment of emergency patients. This change will improve the quality of care provided and increase the hospital’s capacity, benefiting both patients and healthcare professionals.

Component 2 is aimed at training and professional development of medical staff in the intensive care and rehabilitation departments, ensuring that modern working conditions are consistent with the necessary skills and competencies to provide high-quality care. A comprehensive training program will provide healthcare professionals in the Berdychiv City Hospital with the necessary knowledge and skills to provide high-quality care to patients in need of intensive care and rehabilitation. Structured and practical training will strengthen the clinical competence of the staff and support the improvement of the quality of healthcare services. The implementation of the training program is led by the NGO Estonian Medical Export Cluster.
