Ireland pledges 1 million euros to support ESTDEV’s healthcare projects in Ukraine
During an official visit to Estonia, Irish Minister for Foreign Affairs Helen McEntee and Estonian Minister of Foreign Affairs Margus Tsahkna signed a joint declaration of intent to strengthen support for Ukraine.
Under the declaration, the Government of Ireland has committed €1 million to the Estonian Centre for International Development (ESTDEV) to support healthcare and education initiatives in Ukraine.
The funding will help strengthen the training of Ukrainian healthcare professionals and modernise medical education curricula. Through the programme, university lecturers and healthcare workers across Ukraine will have access to professional development and specialised training designed to enhance the capacity of the healthcare system and improve practical clinical skills.
Led by ESTDEV, the programme supports the long-term recovery and development of Ukraine’s healthcare sector at a time when the country continues to face immense pressure on healthcare services and workforce development because of the war.
Ireland and Estonia already have an established track record of cooperation in Ukraine’s healthcare sector. In 2025, the Irish Government provided 1 million euros to ESTDEV for the renovation of the intensive care and rehabilitation wards of the Berdychiv Hospital. The project aims to improve the quality of healthcare services in the region, with construction works scheduled for completion in 2027.
The new contribution reaffirms Estonia’s and Ireland’s shared commitment to Ukraine’s recovery and resilience, while helping to build a stronger, more modern healthcare system for the future.
