Project objectives
The project supports the implementation of community-based climate change adaptation and sustainable development models in the Odessa region and strengthens cooperation between coastal communities with Estonia and the wider Baltic Sea region.
The aim is to promote good governance, civil society participation and climate-resilient development at the regional level in Ukraine. The project contributes to Ukraine’s post-war sustainable recovery by helping to integrate climate adaptation and cultural heritage protection principles into the development strategies of local governments and communities, while supporting the promotion of democratic values and the green transition.
Actions and results
The project involves the Odessa city government and local NGOs (environmental and cultural heritage sectors). These partners play a central role in developing democracy in Ukraine, implementing good governance practices, supporting regional development and involving civil society in decision-making and reform processes. The project also helps to strengthen community self-expression, promoting transparency and a culture of public debate.
Through workshops, study tours and co-creation, communities will be provided with the knowledge to conduct reasoned discussions and also the tools for practical activities that will help adapt to climate change and also strengthen participatory democracy. Community pilot activities that link climate and cultural heritage issues will be supported. A pilot activity is under discussion in the Odessa region that focuses on increasing the climate resilience of coastal areas - for example, a community-designed and built green space that will help mitigate the effects of heat waves and floods. Such a solution combines nature-based measures with community participation and awareness-raising.
