Agriculture has always been important for Uganda, providing livelihoods for millions. According to the Uganda Bureau of Statistics, nearly 68% of Uganda's population works in the agricultural sector.

The idea of the project builds on Garage48's long experience in running agritech programmes in Africa as well as in Europe (SAIS, Tech for Agriculture, EU:Africa the Journey agricultural challenges, etc.). The aforementioned programmes have always brought together experts from the IT community and farmers with practical experience and knowledge. Many of the solutions created are more technical in nature than the prototypes coming out of the hacks, and all the prototypes created solve real-life problems.

Project objectives

This project orchestrates a dynamic collaboration between the public and private sectors to address agricultural challenges identified by government agencies like NARO, NAAC, UCDA, NAADS, and the Ministry of Agriculture.

Actions and results

From April to September, stakeholders coalesce around meticulously prepared problem statements and areas of innovation. In October, a 3-day hackathon in Kampala unites 100 agritech experts and tech enthusiasts who gather to prototype solutions to the challenges agriculture is facing.  Best teams continue to develop their prototype further in the 4 day bootcamp. Top5 teams will receive funding to develop their products/services further, access to co-working space and 6-month long coaching. StartHub, NiiH, and Garage48 synergize efforts to provide administrative support, mentorship, and networking opportunities, cultivating a thriving ecosystem for agritech innovation.
