The current situation in Ukraine has increased the stress burden on children and families and the need for structured and supportive leisure activities. At the same time, global gender inequality persists in the fields of technology and science, as girls’ interest and confidence in these fields is formed at an early age and is strongly influenced by social attitudes and role models. The project addresses these challenges by creating a pilot of technology education for girls, led by local partners.

Project objectives

The overall goal of the project is to increase Ukrainian girls' access to high-quality and safe technology and science education in order to increase their confidence, interest, and readiness to participate in the technology field in the future, and thereby contribute to reducing gender inequality in education and the labor market.

Actions and results

The project will deliver two technology education courses, each consisting of 10 lessons covering different STEM topics (a total of 20 unique lessons). Altogether, 500 lessons will be conducted over the course of the project (calculated across all participants). Local instructors will be trained and supported, learning materials will be adapted and translated into Ukrainian, and a practical organisational and logistics model for running the clubs will be developed. The quality of activities will be supported through monitoring and a simple impact assessment framework (participation, retention, girls’ self-efficacy and interest in technology, and instructors’ confidence).

As a result of the project, participating girls are expected to demonstrate increased confidence and interest in technology, local instructors’ capacity to deliver the programme will improve, and a functional and sustainable model for girls’ STEM extracurricular education will be established in the pilot areas. By the end of the project, evidence-based conclusions will be available to support decisions on continuation and potential scaling of the programme in Ukraine.
