Since February 2022, Ukraine has been the scene of large-scale hostilities, which have led to a widespread proliferation of mines and explosives. Today, Ukraine has become the most mined country in the world, with more than 250 000 km² of potentially mined areas. This accounts for more than a third of Ukraine's total surface area. According to the international think tank GLOBSEC, Ukraine currently has the largest area of mined land in the world, which at the current rate will take more than 700 years to clear to make safe.

Mines and explosives pose a serious threat to the life and health of civilians, causing death and injury. They are also preventing humanitarian aid from reaching the people who need it and hampering the rehabilitation of infrastructure. In the long term, mines hamper economic activity and hinder the development of regions.

Ukraine urgently needs large-scale demining to ensure the safety of its citizens and to rebuild the country's infrastructure. At present, there is a shortage of demining specialists in Ukraine and they lack the necessary equipment and technology. Demining is a dangerous and time-consuming job that requires specialised training and experience.

Project objectives

The main objective of the project is to improve Ukraine's demining capacity through the construction of a modular fortress at the Police Academy in Zhytomyr, which will provide training, accommodation and logistical support for deminers. This in turn will help to speed up demining operations and make them more efficient.

Actions and results

  • The concept and the technical specification of the modular castle will be drawn up.
  • The call for tender will be carried out for a modular castle (10 mobile modules in total).
  • The module fortress will be delivered and transported to Ukraine.
